Who is Floyd Young?
Our father and patriarch of Bluffton and Hidden Creek Golf Clubs, Floyd Alan Young, was inducted in to the Lima/Allen County Golf Hall of Fame in 2014. Most of you know him to be a generous, easy going, honest and fair man. He has been our mentor, our role model and teacher, not only in golf but in life. He has taught us everything we know about the game of golf and the golf business, as well as many other individuals in Allen County and around the world.
Floyd A. Young’s History of Golf
Floyd spent time in Germany and Japan between 1967 and 1969 working at different golf courses playing and perfecting his game. He came back to the states where he turned professional and worked at the PGA National in Florida from 1969-75 during the winter months. In February 1971 he caddied for Jack Nicklaus during his PGA Championship (Major) win at PGA National. He moved to Akron, OH and was hired at Firestone Country Club and worked as an assistant to Bobby Nickels from 1970-1976. During that time, he also married Drue and they began their family. Our father and mother moved to Cambridge, OH and he was hired at Cambridge Country Club as the Head Pro from 1975 to 1989. At Cambridge, Floyd headed up multiple Junior Golf Programs and hosted tournaments as well. He was a playing pro and offered lessons. He played in countless Pro Am Tournaments during this time. In July of 1989, they took a leap of faith and bought Bluffton Golf Club in Bluffton, OH.
Bluffton Golf Club—he took what many people believed to be “a goat track ” and he showed the Allen county golfing community and our family how he could transform Bluffton from 1989 to what it is today! A lush, green, beautifully maintained golf course with quick greens and multiple cuts of grass—Bluffton has always been Floyd’s baby.
“See the difference, Play the difference” this has been our motto at BGC for years thanks to Drue, his wife. Bluffton has been a family owned and operated business from the beginning and it continues today to be run by Floyd & Drue & Luke his son, who now heads up the outside maintenance crew.
In December of 2009 Floyd and his family took another leap of faith and purchased Golf @ Sugar Creek in Lima, OH, which we called Hidden Creek Golf Club—Floyd and Luke turned Hidden Creek around (just as they did with Bluffton) and have continued to put every effort into making Hidden Creek Golf Club one of the top notch golf courses in the area. There is no public golf course in the area that has fairways like Hidden Creek. “If you can’t do perfect, then do better!” Is our motto for our family, our golf course and our staff.
Floyd has continued over the years to support the youth golf programs such as Lima Junior Golf, as well as being the home course to several schools in the area including Bluffton High School, Ada High School, Temple Christian, and Cory Rawson High School. He has always generously given his time and course for the youth of Allen County to promote golf to preserve the game. He also has offered golf camps and mini clinics over the years. Floyd has hosted the Lima City Golf Tournaments for the Men and Women of Allen County. Other organizations such as the Black Swamp Jr. Golf League also utilizes our courses as well to continue to promote the love for this game.
Floyd continues to be well known throughout Ohio for his knowledge of this game we call golf. Our family and our members believe that if you have a question about golf—Floyd is the man to talk to!
Thank you all for your time and consideration of our nomination of our dad…
